EARTH Aboard the International Space Station -- 17 Mar 2016 -- British ESA astronaut Tim Peake on the International Space Station works on three laptops to control a probe called Eurobot on Earth at the European Space Agency European Space Research and Technology Centre (ESTEC) in Noordwijk, The Netherlands. The Space Station flies at around 17 150 mph (28 800 km, h) and completes a full orbit of Earth every 90 minutes, so throughout the session his commands could be beamed directly to the car-sized rover while at other times the Space Station will be on the other side of the planet – so commands need to be relayed through satellites and multiple control centres. Engineers at ESA’s operations centre created a new type of ‘space internet’ that adapts to the changing connections and network speed, ensuring smooth control. Tim Peake will be driving on Earth from space in part 2 of the experiment on 25 Apr 2016. EXPA Pictures © 2016, PhotoCredit: EXPA/ Photoshot/ Atlas Photo Archive/NASA
